Social Motivators are integral members of the communities we serve in India and Nepal. They embody local knowledge and drive meaningful change from within.
As true living links between Karuna-Shechen and the communities, they ensure that each initiative is in perfect harmony with the needs on the ground and the values of the organization. Their commitment allows the implementation of effective and sustainable programs.
Learn More About Social Motivators
We spoke with Karna Bahadur Thada Magar, a Social Motivator since 2019 in Phikkal, Sindhuli district, Nepal. He describes what his days look like.
A Representative of Karuna
One of Karna’s main functions is to assess the needs of the communities and report them to us, enabling the implementation of effective programs. This requires him to collaborate with various stakeholders, leading to frequent travels around Phikkal.
Karna’s exceptional skill in building relationships is a significant strength for our organization. He explains:
“We start by establishing contact with local representatives, school committees, health workers, and teachers. It’s about introducing ourselves, sharing our vision, and building trust. This approach allows us to implement our programs effectively and efficiently.“
More concretely, although his days vary, here is a typical day:
- Morning: Karna conducts field visits.
- Noon: Karna participates in discussions about programs.
- End of the Day: Karna reflects on potential initiatives.
In other words, his role as a motivator is a delicate balance between action and reflection, always aiming to best serve the communities.
Resilience to Overcome Obstacles
Although his days are sometimes filled with challenges, his determination and courage allow him to bounce back and fulfill his commitments. He shares:
“Often, the roads are risky, and transportation is scarce. There are days when we have no choice but to trek on foot to reach our destinations.
Additionally, the remoteness of our areas sometimes leads to delays in transporting materials, which can raise expectations among beneficiaries. But we tackle these issues through open communication. We sit down with stakeholders, explain the situations, and find solutions together.”
The Joy of Making a Difference
Karna is happy to observe behavioral changes in beneficiaries and to receive positive feedback.
He mentions the Early Childhood Development program, which is particularly close to his heart: “This program doesn’t just support children; it involves parents, teachers, and the entire community. It’s about nurturing the roots of our education system.”
Karna explains that being a Social Motivator has taught him valuable lessons about development: “I’ve learned the importance of capacity-building and addressing the needs of the most vulnerable groups. “
He continues, rejoicing in the impact of the programs on the people he works with: “The willingness of community members to learn and participate, regardless of age, is truly inspiring.”
A Commitment to Continue
Karna shares his aspirations for the future of Nepal’s rural areas: “We need to emphasize capacity-building and education, environmental preservation, improvements in the education sector, promotion of healthy living, access to safe drinking water, and construction of irrigation ponds.“
He also encourages young people to get involved: “ It is crucial for youth to develop their skills and contribute wholeheartedly to the development of their areas. To collaborate with local government bodies, and remember that development is a collective responsibility.“
