Sandhna Sinha joined Karuna-Shechen in India’s Bihar region in 2011 as a nurse, and since 2020, as a community health mobilizer. She has played a key role in developing various programs and organizing them in India’s Bihar region.

A caring approach

Sandhna says that altruism is a notion that resonates deeply with her:

Making a positive difference in the lives of those most in need gives me a sense of purpose beyond myself. This is what altruism in its truest sense means to me.”

”This approach is fuelled by her spirituality, which is influenced by the Buddhist principle that: “One should make a genuine effort to do what one can do”.

It is in this spirit that she places sincerity and commitment at the heart of her work.

A commitment to meaningful causes

Her role as a community health mobilizer enables her to take action on a variety of issues, and to make a contribution to causes that are dear to her heart.

Sandhna facilitates community interventions for early childhood activities, provides vital support for women’s and children’s health care, as well as running counseling and awareness-raising sessions for Child Protection. She always strives to integrate compassion and self-determination into her programs.

In her  community development role, she is able to emphasize the right of women and children to be safe and healthy. She states:  “Being a community health mobilizer allows me to embody the core principles of Karuna-Shechen’s mission. The ability to connect with community members, understand their needs, and provide assistance is the most rewarding aspectof my role.”

Sandhna, a staunch supporter of gender equality, is aware of the challenges and obstacles facing women in local communities. She explains that “Empowering women is essential to breaking generational stereotypes and promoting equality, especially in a state like Bihar.”

Sandhna organizes sessions such as “Women and Child Healthcare”, which focus entirely on the health and well-being of women in the community. She works to give women the knowledge, skills and resources they need to improve their lives and those of their families. These workshops reflect Sandhna’s commitment.

Sandhna’s impact on the communities she serves goes far beyond her professional duties.

Her dedication makes her an indispensable member of Karuna-Shechen.

Her colleagues report that is greatly respected, and the children she works with are delighted by her activities with them.

I love when she visits our center! All the activities are fun, but I especially enjoy the outdoor ones. Hula hooping is my favorite—I’m really good at it!

Setting up long-term initiatives

Looking to the future, Sandhna has high aspirations and shares with us her observations on the villages. “Hygiene and sanitation pose a significant challenge in Bihar, especially in rural areas. Open defecation remains common due to a lack of awareness and proper sanitation infrastructure. Many health problems can be prevented by improving the sanitation and hygiene standards in the communities.”

The programs already in place are here to stay. Sandhna’s commitment extends to a wide range of issues, and she is able to identify problems and find appropriate solutions in concert with the communities.

She concludes this inspiring testimonial on a positive note with wishes for the future. “Through our ongoing activities such as Mobile Camps, prevention and awareness sessions, and more, we aim to promote hygiene practices that contribute to the overall health and well-being of the community.

My ultimate wish is to see thriving, healthy, and hygienic communities prosper.
