Karuna-Shechen is pleased to announce the appointment of Sunita Sharma as our new Executive Director in Nepal. Sharma’s arrival marks an important milestone for our organization as we continue to expand our impact across the region.
Unwavering Commitment
Sunita Sharma’s experience in development aid began in 2000 following an internship with a national NGO. She has now been working in this field for twenty-three years.
She shares her story:
“My professional career spans two decades. Immediately, after joining Karuna I found my personal values perfectly matched with the organizational values. Since then each day has been a pleasant learning experience for me.”
Sunita joined Karuna in June 2022 as the Program Director in Nepal, responsible for overseeing and ensuring the successful implementation of projects.
Her role within the organization took a new turn in November 2023, when she was appointed Interim Executive Director.
Her resilience, determination to break the cycle of poverty, and commitment to fighting gender inequality led to her official appointment to the position in June 2024.
The opportunity to take on the role of Executive Director was motivated by the organization’s vision and the desire to make a meaningful impact on a larger scale, particularly in advancing gender equality. I believe that empowering women and marginalized communities is crucial for sustainable development and social justice.

Now in charge of the administrative and operational management of Karuna-Shechen Nepal, Sunita Sharma explains that her priority is to strengthen the organizational capacity of the association, enhance community engagement, expand the scope of projects, and increase their environmental sustainability: “Enhancing the organization’s capacity involves fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment, investing in staff development, and ensuring we have the necessary resources to achieve our mission.”
To achieve these goals, the Executive Director places her trust in Karuna’s teams and the communities. She believes that when everyone combines their skills with those of others, a synergy for progress is created.
