For Jafhar Miya, his healthcare journey began with a simple difficulty: finding somewhere to receive affordable medical care. At 73, he eventually discovered Karuna-Shechen’s Clinic in Bodhgaya through a family friend. Since then, he has found more than a place to consult a doctor: a diagnosis, treatment, the tests he needs and continued care over time.
“I could not get a proper diagnosis at first because I could not afford the treatment. Where I live, affordable healthcare options are limited, and people often end up relying on local unqualified practitioners, which can delay proper diagnosis and care.” he says.
At the clinic, he was diagnosed with hypertension and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). He has since remained under the clinic’s care and continues to receive treatment for both conditions.
“After my family friend told me about the clinic, I decided to come here. The treatment is affordable, and it is much easier for me to come here and continue my treatment.”

Over time, his healthcare needs have involved more than consultations. Whenever the doctor recommends further investigations, Jafhar can also access pathology and X-ray services at the clinic.
“If I need a pathology test or an X-ray, I can get it here. I do not have to go looking for another place, and the cost is much more affordable compared to other facilities. That makes things easier for me.”

Although the clinic is around 10 km from his home, he finds it more affordable than private facilities closer to where he lives. Being able to consult a doctor and access the necessary tests at a cost he can afford means he can continue his treatment without having to compromise on appropriate care or turn to unqualified practitioners.
His experience shows the importance of having healthcare facilities that are both accessible and affordable, and that can meet patients’ needs over time. For people living with long-term health conditions, being able to consult a doctor, receive treatment and access the necessary tests in one place can make it much easier to continue their care.
What began for Jafhar with a simple recommendation from a family friend has become ongoing care at a healthcare facility he can rely on.
