Within Karuna-Shechen’s training programs, teachers play an essential role. Far beyond simply sharing knowledge, they support young people throughout their learning journey, encourage their independence and help them become engaged members of their communities. The stories of Shisty in India and Balika in Nepal illustrate the strength of this commitment every day.

Sharing knowledge… and so much more

On the occasion of Teachers’ Day in India, students from the computer training section at the Karuna-Shechen Vocational Training Center in Jharkhand took the opportunity to thank their teacher, Shisty. To celebrate her dedication, they decorated the computer room where they learn alongside her every day.

For Shisty, teaching goes far beyond developing technical skills.

“Being a teacher is not just a profession, it is a responsibility: to awaken students’ curiosity and share the knowledge and values that will guide them throughout their lives. In my teaching, I strive not only to share technical knowledge, but also to inspire students to think, understand and become independent. I see every student as a story full of possibilities, and I am proud to be part of these stories as a guide helping them find the right direction. On Teachers’ Day, I would like to thank all my students, who have taught me that learning is always a mutual process. Through our exchanges, I learn something new every day.”

This vision of teaching, based on listening, trust and exchange, lies at the heart of Karuna-Shechen’s approach: creating an environment where everyone can learn, grow and reveal their potential.

Supporting teachers to strengthen communities

In Nepal, Balika represents another dimension of this commitment. A dedicated teacher, she took on the responsibility of leading her school’s Youth Club, a space where students develop their leadership skills, confidence and sense of responsibility.

This new role was a significant challenge. Mobilising students and understanding the administrative steps required to register the club with the municipality were new experiences for her. A capacity-building training provided by Karuna-Shechen gave her the skills and confidence she needed to succeed.

Thanks to this training and support, I learned how to empower students, organise activities effectively and ensure that the Youth Club has a real impact in our school and community.

Today, Balika supports young people in a variety of projects: tree planting, school cleanliness campaigns, fundraising activities during the traditional Deusi-Bhailo festival, and the creation of a collective savings system. Through these initiatives, students learn how to work as a team, manage a budget and lead projects that benefit their school.

Over time, Balika has become a recognised mentor, both for her students and her fellow teachers. Her journey demonstrates how supporting teachers can be a powerful way to sustainably strengthen schools and communities.

Helping those who help others grow

Whether they are teaching digital skills in India or supporting youth engagement in Nepal, Shisty and Balika share the same conviction: a teacher does more than teach — they open up new possibilities.

By supporting teachers in their practice and professional development, Karuna-Shechen helps create learning environments where young people gain not only knowledge, but also the confidence, skills and values they need to build their future

Together, let’s give teachers the means to unlock the potential of every young person.
