Karuna-Shechen was founded in 2000 by Matthieu Ricard in order to implement humanitarian projects in the areas of health, education, and community development for disadvantaged populations in northern India, Nepal and Tibet.
Responding to the needs of the populations we serve, Karuna-Shechen also focuses on local resources and supporting projects that foster long-term sustainability.
In 2017, a Swiss Karuna-Shechen branch was created, in the form of a non-profit, secular and apolitical association. Headquartered in Geneva, it is recognized as a public utility in Switzerland.
Karuna-Shechen Switzerland follows the mission defined by Karuna-Shechen, and our activities are guided by the core values of altruism, compassion in action, interdependence and benevolence.
The association organizes meetings, conferences, events and concerts to raise awareness and generate donations to finance humanitarian projects in the Himalayan region.
Karuna-Shechen Switzerland also works to convey the spirit and values of its founder by promoting times of sharing and reflection, both on the ground and between the various international associations.
