Vocational training is central to our goal of empowering the poor in India. Started in 2014 with a few workshops, the initiative has quickly grown into a full-fledged program that is operating successfully in our focus states of Bihar and Jharkhand.
In an effort to extend our humanitarian services to more people, we built a new clinic and operations center in Hata, in the Indian state of Jharkhand, which opened last year. In addition to improved health services, this building has an entire section dedicated solely to providing vocational training.
Training was scheduled to begin in March 2020, shortly after the inauguration of our operations center. However, due to the pandemic, it was not until March 2021 that we were able to initiate this program, so long awaited by the beneficiaries.
On March 1st, 2021, our vocational training program took off! 9 sewing students and 10 computer students joined us. Within 3 weeks, the number of students enrolled in sewing classes has grown to 23. The students are currently being trained in the manual methods of folding patterns and fabrics. Classes are held three times a week: Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
Sunita Pal, 22, is one of our sewing students. She shares her experience:
“I was fascinated by embroidery and dreamed of learning the creative art, but my father would not allow me to take a course. Fortunately, today, my husband and in-laws are very supportive. When I heard that Karuna was offering sewing classes, my husband pushed me to sign up for the training.
The workshops started this month and I have made friends. Our trainers are extremely patient with us and make sure we learn without any hesitation or fear. After this training, I want to make a living by opening a tailoring business. I am looking forward to being able to support my family financially with my acquired sewing and embroidery skills!”
Supporting Karuna-Shechen is also supporting dozens of women like Sunita to pursue their dreams and express their full potential! To take action with us, make a donation.
