The states of Bihar and Jharkhand have some the lowest literacy rates in India. Karuna-Shechen organizes non-formal education classes for women in rural villages. We teach basic math and literacy skills, as well as national and world geography.
The village women themselves initiated this project and, based on their desire to learn, we provide the support.
Karuna-Shechen offers vocational training programs to rural women enrolled in our non-formal education centers. Our objective is to empower rural women by teaching them income-generating skills such as making pickles, incense, candles, chalk, paper bags, khaki and cultivating mushrooms.
Read here to learn how one of our vocational training programs changed the life of Rinku, from Banahi.
At our center in Bodhgaya (Bihar), we offer free computer courses to provide underprivileged rural youth with better employment opportunities- including extensive courses on Office Management and Desktop Publishing. In exchange, participants pledge to devote five hours per week towards voluntary services in their respective villages.
