In collaboration with the monks from the nearby Shechen Monastery which sheltered thousands of homeless, the Shechen Medical Clinic has been able to assist the injured.
All casualties in the area around the Shechen Clinic were rushed to the nearest trauma centers and, as planned, Shechen Monastery compound is now a shelter and medical first aid center for anyone needing such assistance. Food and water are being provided by the Monastery to the thousands of people that have been sheltered there.
The Shechen Clinic does not act as a trauma center, but as a triage center for assessing injury severity. Our doctors and medical staff have been mobilized and are working around the clock to address emergencies in different parts of the city.
In preparation for such a disaster, Karuna-Shechen has been training Advanced First Aiders (AFA) from all over Nepal. It began in 2013 with the training of 60 AFAs in Boudhanath, among them over 35 monks from the Shechen Monastery. They are currently assisting with the rescue efforts.
We are still anxiously waiting to hear from the remote villages where we have operations. We fear there has been maximum damage and probably many casualties.
Given the magnitude of the disaster, with hundreds of thousands people rendered homeless, assistance will be needed for many months to come.
